How to transition your skincare to spring

Just like the seasons change, your skincare should be changing too!

Wondering how to adjust your skincare routine to navigate the seasons? Two words...

I truly believe we should all have a go-to thin and thick moisturizer to navigate the seasons and products.

  • A lightweight moisturizer is great in the AM before sunscreen, and in warm months some skin types may also want to reach for the lightweight option as your PM moisturizer - EltaMD PM Therapy or Epionce Facial Lotion
  • A thicker moisturizer can be used year-round as your PM moisturizer (for some skin types this is a must) like Epionce Intensive Nourishing Cream
  • And there are some moisturizers that are in between weights and can be used year round as your AM and PM moisturizer…. also, dependent on skin type.
  • I'm also a huge fan of a hydrating mask like Epionce Enriched Firming Mask to use as an overnight moisturizer as needed

The moisturizer that's best for you is mostly dependent on the active ingredients you're using in your routine and, of course, your skin type.

Let's tackle a common misconception

Although retinoids cause photosensitivity, meaning they can cause our skin to become more red and burnt quicker in the sun - I actually worry about them less in spring and summer because we apply them at night for a reason and rinse with water in AM.

Generally there’s more moisture in the air as it gets warmer and this is what makes all of the difference to tolerating a retinoid better in summer months (as long as you use it properly in the PM and don’t apply it to burnt skin!)

I often hear people say I stopped my retinoid in summer because I was at the beach/lake a lot, but honestly I would rather you stop using a retinoid on the ski slopes. Why? Cold weather and retinoids both affect the protective moisture skin barrier and can cause it to become compromised. If you’ve ever had burning and stinging on your skin this means it’s compromised. Hence the term “barrier repair” as the answer.

If you have a complete skincare routine- you’re covered no worries!

The same goes with the chemical exfoliant ingredients that are often found in toners and toning pads and now more and more in serums. These are also active ingredients.

Active ingredients are anything that improves the skin- texture, breakouts, discoloration. These are the most important ingredients for skin health as we age but can also cause dry, irritated skin if not used appropriately….again why a complete skincare routine is a MUST.
